DTI issues tips in managing household budget
By: Pilar S. Mabaquiao

SAN JOSE, Antique August 9 (PIA) – -In order to help consumers find ways to save money even in small amount and spend only according to the needs of the family, the Department of Trade and Industry issues tips in managing the family budget.

Engr. Lynna Joy Cardinal, Information Officer of DTI Antique in a meeting with a group of mother members of  Mother’s Club organized by the teachers of  Sebaste Central School in Sebaste, Antique emphasized the need to prioritize the expenses of the family according to its needs.

During the discussion, Cardinal stressed the need to give priority to the basic needs which is food, shelter and clothing then health and education of children.

She said, in most cases mothers are the ones who manage the family budget. Thus, Cardinal said they must be aware of the products that are safe and have passed the quality standards.

Some of the tips in managing the family budget:

·         Buy products in public markets rather than in supermarkets. Goods are fresh and much cheaper in public markets. Sellers often give out discounts to regular consumers.

·         Before shopping, make a list of goods you need to purchase to avoid unnecessary or impulse buying. By having a list you can avoid buying things you don’t need.

·         Pay your loans. Someone will trust you to borrow again if you know how to pay your loans.

·         Avoid buying things that you don’t need. Before you decide to buy ask yourself first if the products are really needed. There are things that we bought that only end up in the stock room. Buying something not needed means extra expenses, instead of spending it, save the money for future use.

·         Discuss with family members the status of your finances. By doing so, they too will understand and help you save.

In conclusion Cardinal said with our limited income, we really have to decide to save something for the future. We need to become well-informed consumers. (JCM/PSM/PIA6 Antique)

Corrupt successor will send PHL back to GMA dark ages
Cayetano: Extend PNoy’s gains, not his term

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter “Companero” S. Cayetano said he is all for extending the reform agenda of President Benigno Aquino III's administration but not the term of the chief executive.

"I have been fully supportive of President Aquino and his administration's 'Tuwid na Daan' reforms and platform of good governance which have led to an impressive economic growth. Moving forward, the Filipino electorate must choose a leader who will continue what the Aquino administration has started," Cayetano said.

The Senate leader said Aquino has done more than enough for the country and deserves to enjoy his life with his family when he steps down by the year 2016.

The President himself as well as the Palace have said that he is not interested nor favors in Charter Change nor term extension.

Aside from its economic gains, the Aquino government also proved to be committed to the principles of transparency and accountability by stopping the abuse of public funds and putting powerful politicians-turned-alleged plunderers behind bars.

"Choosing the next chief executive in the 2016 elections will be crucial. It will determine if we will continue to move forward or go back to a GMA type of governance where protest and instability were constant because of widespread corruption," he said.

Cayetano also stated that while criticisms against the present administration are good to the extent that they serve as check and balances, ideas and proposals on how to help Filipino families cope with everyday problems should be prioritized.

"And I see the Aquino government's sincere desire to do just that. But If we truly believe in President Aquino, we should not endanger his legacy by putting a corrupt official into power," he said.

"Huwag tayong magpabulag sa matataas na ratings at political propaganda. Magkakaroon lamang ng peace of mind ang Pangulo kung alam niya na ang susunod na presidente ay ipagpapatuloy ang kanyang mga reporma."2

Cayetano believes that when there is zero tolerance for corruption in government, Filipino families will have better access to improved social services.

“Because every peso stolen by corrupt politicians is a peso that should have been spent for services for the Filipino family.

gathered on March 12-13 in Bacolod City;
AWARE of the plight of over 4,000 households of small-scale seaweeds, rice and coconut farmers and
fishers and of the rich biodiversity in the nine-island municipality of Caluya, Antique, home to at least 33
species of mangroves, thriving seagrass beds, and marine species as well as a bustling annual 400-million
Php seaweeds industry;
DEEPLY CONCERNED about the serious threat to the municipality's biodiversity and small family farming
livelihoods posed by the aggressive coal mining expansion of Semirara Mining Corporation (SMC) from
5,000 hectares to a possible 12,500 hectares, and now from Barangay Semirara to a potential new site in
Barangay Tinogboc, regrettably assisted no less by the local government of Caluya, which is supposed
to protect the citizens and enforce the rule of law;
ANGERED by the most recent bulldozing ordered by the LGU of Caluya of five -hectare coconut and fruit
trees and  riceland being tilled for more than a generation by small farmers in Sitio Poocan in Brgy
Tinogboc and the arrest on February 28, 2014 of Sabang-Poocan Farmers and Fishers Association
(SAPOFFA) leader, Bernard Magdaug, and Pambansang Kilusan ng mga Samahang Magsasaka
(PAKISAMA)  volunteer, Mark Kato,   both done without due process,  in their efforts to assist the
affected farmers  collectively and non-violently stop the bulldozer;
CALL on:
the Chair of the Commission on Human Rights to order expeditious completion of her office's
investigation  on the Caluya arrest and bulldozing event, to publish its report, and to help prosecute
violators of civil, political, economic, and cultural rights especially of the affected small family farmers;
the Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government  to complete his office's
investigation to determine accountability of the Municipal Mayor,  the town officials, and the police
personnel  involved in the above-mentioned illegal arrest and bulldozing as well as associated divestment
of donated land by the Municipality to faclitate the forced relocation of Sitio Sabang and the sale of said
land to the company; and
the Secretaries of the Departments of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR), Agriculture, and the Head of Philippine Coconut Authority to order an investigation to
determine land classification of the Caluya municipality,  to file appropriate charges to those who
bulldozed the trees, including coconuts, without required permits, and to provide appropriate land
tenure instruments in recognition to earned vested rights of claimant farmers.
Finally, we call on our colleagues in civil society, including media, academe, and churches both locally
and internationally especially in celebration of this year's United Nations-declared International Year
of Family Farming, to aggressively support in any way we can, including the broad dissemination of the
Caluya farmers story in written and audio/visual forms,  to ensure their eventual successful defence of
their sustainable seaweeds and farming livelihoods and biodiversity.
