SAN JOSE , Antique – Talks have spread like wildfire here on the mysterious "powers" of a three- year-old girl in Barangay Mojon.
The eldest of two siblings, the girl first got the attention of her baffled parents then extended family members on her unexplained ability to foresee the start of a fire.
The talks eventually reached town officials and local police with validation and confirmation made by no less than San Jose Mayor Ronie Molina. (See related story on page 2).
The incident sparked media interest that has now totally engulfed the quiet village with 24/7 attention from kibitzers up to nearby towns.News Express (NE) in a visit was granted an exclusive by the girl’s father as he narrated the family’s current ordeal in the spate of fires foreseen by her daughter. From burnt clothes, pillows, sleeping mats, a Karaoke unit of the neighboring relative, the 25 year-old father admits to being at a total loss on what has been happening. Her Power
The father told NE that he first came to know of his daughter’s "power" late February. A tricycle driver by profession, he recalled taking her daughter and wife to the town proper one Monday morning to buy soda.
When he was about to leave his tricycle, his daughter innocently said, "may sunog alas nuebe (There will be fire at nine o’clock)." He ignored such and went ahead with his errand leaving his wife and the young girl.
Yet true enough upon his return just a little after 9am, the spare tire of his tricycle was burning. Incidentally, the young girl neither knows how to tell time nor does she know her parents own a wristwatch.
It was then that his wife narrated previous incidents of similar nature where the girl would say something about a fire and then fires indeed happen.
‘One of a Kind’
Mayor Molina came out in the open last Wednesday to confirm the incidents following a visit to the barangay.
"One of a kind. A new experience for us. Beyond explanation. I am at a loss," the mayor said in an NE interview adding that he can not offer some plausible reasoning for the occurrences.
In one baffling moment, he shared, was his personal visit to the family hut where the young girl out of the blue remarked, "May masunog….(something will burn)." Again true enough, Mayor Molina saw a hanging shirt suddenly on fire that left him momentarily speechless.
"Nobody touched it. It was just there. Nobody was even close to it. It just started in seconds. The shirt was on fire," he continued.
Concerned on the safety of the family and the neighbors, Mayor Molina ordered for the town’s fire truck to be on standby in Barangay Mojon.
Meantime, the father stopped plying his tricycle with the girl on 24/7 watch. He said he is most concerned with what will happen to her young girl with no one helping her put out the fires.
The family’s hut has since been secured by a yellow police line that Mayor Molina ordered to be put up.
"That is just to secure the area from people who come over," he explained.
Visitors
The past days saw the arrivals of an Iloilo City-based psychic, a visiting "exorcist", a Charismatic movement leader alongside a pastor.
"Biblical cure" would be the approach said Pastor Edmund Celiz who said that since his attempt to "cleanse" the girl and the area, signs of the unknown’s withdrawal were observed.
"I can’t identify who or what because it is unseen," Pastor Celiz said of the supposed supernatural beings in control of the young girl’s situation.
Psychic Master Singh for his part explained that who or what is behind all these are definitely "earthbound" and can either be good spirits or bad ones.
Master Singh though is positive that what is happening is not "spiritual possession" but the counter moves must be spiritual in nature.
Earlier radio reports of a "pyrokinesis" was debunked by Master Singh saying the manifestations are not consistent to a "firestarter" pattern. What has been observed was that it was not the young girl per se who starts the fire but is seemingly used to relay that a fire is forthcoming, he said.
Amulets would be good but nothing metal nor bunch of garlic. What is needed he said, are prayers.
