German-funded project exits Panay

SAN JOSE, Antique — German-funded Philippine Endangered Species and Conservation Project (PESCP) will be exiting Panay Island this year, according to its manager Maria Ibabao.
PESCP has accomplished several environment preservation initiatives especially in Antique where it is based.
These included the European grant for the breeding of the Visayas Tarictic Hornbill, considered as one of the critically endangered hornbills in the world, and the discovery of new wildlife species in Panay that were brought to the attention of conservationists in European countries.
Because of their wildlife conservation efforts, the Provincial Board has declared the hornbill as the official bird of the province.
German conservationist Dr. Eberhard Curio founded the PESCP currently based in Pandan, Antique.
Last year, Curio received the Albert Einstein Award of Excellence given by the American Biographical Institute for having demonstrated effectiveness and distinction in his field.
In 2001, he served as chair of the biodiversity in the Association of Southeast Asian Nation assigned by EU ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation.
